Thrifty Thursday | discounts and concessions

The Aldi super-six this week are salad potatoes (1Kg), green beans (220g), oranges, pineapple, large vine tomatoes (450g) and cauliflower. They are all 69p each. Green beans are really healthy and if the weather keeps improving, I’ll be eating a few salads.

I like an occasional prawn salad (with chips). I haven’t been shopping yet,  but I’ve decided on a chicken again. I can eat it until it comes out my ears, so it will last me a couple of days and I won’t need to cook. The Thursday special offers include a chicken crown for 2.69; which is OK if you don’t want the wings and legs. There are other offers on that page. I might have the frying pan, I need a new one, the non-sticks coming off mine. They have lots of gardening stuff in the Thursday offers too.

In the Sunday offers they have masonry paint for  6.99 for 5 litres; great if your house needs repainting. They have fence treatment and patio cleaner too.

At B&Q they have a Diamond Card for over sixties, which gives you a 10% discount on Wednesdays. Download the application form or ask for one in store. Then take the form to the store and some ID like a driving licence to show you’re over 60 to join.

There are also lots of concessions for children, students and over sixties on travel. Over sixties can get free off peak bus travel and discount travel cards for train travel. The senior railcard is £28 a year and worth looking at because there are other offers, such as days out and trips to the theatre.

The over 60 bus pass varies around the country, click the link for more information.

Don’t forget many cinemas have concessions for children, students and the over 60’s. I was told that you can get the concessionary price at Showcase cinemas and there are discounts if you join ‘insider’.

If your phone is on Orange, there are also Orange Wednesday, 2 for 1 cinema tickets.

I’ve just found another Diamond Club, this time for eating out and it’s for the over 50’s.

Where ever you shop, it’s worth asking about concessions. Many opticians and pharmacies give an over 60’s discount for example. Boots and Specsavers do. Also ask about concessions at all tourist attractions that have an entrance fee.

If you’re thinking of doing a little gardening this year Poundland has lots of seeds and bulbs. Growing your own veggies this summer, could save a few quid.

If you’ve spotted a bargain or know of a discount or concession please share your tip in the comments box.
